Can You Take the PTE Without a Passport? ID Rules to Check [2026 Guide]

Many people get stuck on one practical question before they book the PTE. Their English preparation is moving along, but their passport is being used for a visa application, has expired, or is still being renewed. Then a friend says an identity card should be fine, and suddenly the advice becomes impossible to trust.

Can you take the PTE without a passport? Sometimes, but never assume it. A valid passport is the default identification document for PTE tests. Some candidates may use an official alternative when they take PTE Academic in their country of citizenship, and some tests have their own identification arrangements. The answer depends on the test, the country where you sit it, and the document you selected when booking.

That last part matters. A successful booking is not the same as permission to enter the test room.

01 The default rule is a valid passport

Pearson places a valid passport at the centre of its identification policy. For PTE Academic, if you take the test outside your country of citizenship, a valid passport is the only acceptable form of ID. If you are a Chinese citizen taking PTE in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, or another country, a national identity card, driving licence, passport photograph, or photocopy should not be treated as a passport replacement.

The rule can be different when you take PTE Academic in your own country of citizenship. Pearson publishes a separate country and region exceptions list. It allows certain candidates to use a government-issued alternative, but only in the places and situations described in that list. For example, some EU or Schengen citizens may use a valid national identity card in the relevant countries, and US citizens may have several government-issued alternatives when testing in the United States.

This is not a worldwide permission to use any photo ID. The document must appear in the official exception for your situation. A test centre employee saying that an ID card is probably acceptable is not the same as Pearson confirming it. If you are booking in mainland China, do not rely on a casual answer that a Chinese ID card should work. Check the current rule for your exact test and location before you pay.

The test type also changes the answer. PTE Academic, PTE Core, PTE Academic UKVI, and PTE Home serve different purposes. PTE Core has specific arrangements in Canada, while UK SELT tests can involve a UK eVisa or other documents listed in the policy. Someone else using an alternative ID for PTE Core or a UK test does not automatically create an exception for your PTE Academic booking.

The passport is the safest default, but default does not mean you can skip the policy page.

02 The document details can stop you even when you have ID

Pearson expects you to present the same identification document that you selected during booking. It must be valid on test day and presented as a physical original. Your name, date of birth, citizenship, and gender must match the booking details exactly, and the photograph must match your current appearance. Digital IDs, phone photographs, scans, photocopies, and certified photocopies are not ordinary substitutes.

A passport held by an embassy or immigration office is not the same as a passport that is simply at home. If your passport is being used for an ongoing visa application, Pearson says you should request it back so you can present it on test day. If it is being renewed, replaced after a loss, or reissued, the policy says you should wait for the new passport before booking. Paying first and hoping the document issue will be solved later is a costly gamble.

Name mismatches create another common trap. One missing letter, a different order for given name and family name, or a recent legal name change can cause trouble at check-in. The small details feel harmless while you are filling out a form, but they become identity questions in a secure test centre. After booking, open your myPTE account and confirmation email, then compare the name, date of birth, test type, centre, and date with the document you will actually bring.

If you do not have a passport, do not guess. Read Pearson's identification policy and the country and region exceptions list for your exact test. If the document is not clearly allowed, treat it as not confirmed. Contact local PTE support before scheduling, and keep a written response when the situation involves an immigrant, refugee, stateless person, or a document that is still being processed. Pearson may require an application before you book.

This check feels slower than clicking through the booking page. It is still cheaper than losing the test fee, transport costs, and a day of work because the document at the centre was not accepted.

03 Confirm the ID first, then build a useful study plan

Once your identification is clear, put the test country, test type, appointment date, and required document in the same note. Check the physical document again a few days before the appointment. It is a slightly boring habit, but it changes a vague feeling of I should be fine into a checked plan.

Then return to the part that actually changes your performance. A passport problem cannot fix an unstable Read Aloud, a Repeat Sentence answer that disappears after the first phrase, or a Describe Image response that stops halfway through. Identification gets you into the room. It does not prepare your English for the room.
