PTE Describe Image (DI): Universal High-Score Templates

by Rico

Why Do You Need a DI Template?

In the PTE Speaking test, the Describe Image (DI) task is one that demands high proficiency in fluency. The core logic of the machine scoring system is: Fluency > Pronunciation > Content.

Many candidates freeze up when facing complex charts, causing their fluency scores to plummet. Using a well-practiced template can help you quickly organize your thoughts during the 25-second prep time and maintain a smooth 5.0 reading speed throughout the 40-second response.

Universal High-Score DI Templates

This set of templates applies to over 90% of chart topics (line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, maps, flowcharts, etc.).

Template Structure

  1. Introduction
    • The image gives information about [Chart Title].
    • It is a detailed image.
  2. Body (Look for Max, Min, Trends)
    • From the image, I can see [Item A] is the highest figure, which is about [Number].
    • From the image, I can see [Item B] is the lowest figure, which is about [Number].
    • Also, I can see the trend is changing quickly.
  3. Conclusion
    • In conclusion, the image is very informative.

Advanced Version (For High Scores)

If you are aiming for 79+ or even a perfect score, you can add more detail to the body section, but remember never to sacrifice fluency.

  • Intro: The graph provided reveals data regarding [Chart Title].
  • Body:
    • According to the graph, it is clear that [Maximum] requires the most attention.
    • On the contrary, [Minimum] is the least significant one.
    • Moreover, figures for [Category] are increasing/decreasing significantly.
  • Conclusion: Overall, this chart effectively illustrates the variations in [Topic].

Real-World Demo

Let's assume the chart is a bar chart titled "Population of Major Cities".

Your response should be:

"The image gives information about Population of Major Cities. It is a detailed image. From the image, I can see Tokyo is the highest figure, which is about 37 million. From the image, I can see New York is the lowest figure, which is about 18 million. Also, I can see the trend is changing quickly. In conclusion, the image is very informative."

Preparation Tips

  1. Don't obsess over data accuracy: The machine does not verify if you read the exact numbers, it only listens to how smoothly you speak. Can't read "19,873"? Just read "about 20 thousand" or simply "number 20".
  2. What about unknown words?: Substitute them with "something" directly, or pick any word you recognize. Never pause.
  3. Maintain a steady rhythm: Don't speed up or slow down randomly; keep a stable tone and speed throughout.
  4. Apply it mechanically: For map questions, flowcharts, or even charts without titles, as long as you can catch a few keywords, just plug them into the template.
