A focused way to practise Write From Dictation

Listen for meaning groups

Write From Dictation asks you to listen to a short sentence and type it. Instead of trying to hold every sound separately, listen for a few meaning groups: the subject, the action and its object or detail. Grammar can help you rebuild a small word that was hard to hear, but it should not replace what the audio said. This page plays original English prompts with your browser's speech synthesis, so the voice is for practice and may differ from an exam recording.

Type the sentence in order

The three samples focus on familiar academic settings and contain articles, prepositions and plural forms that are easy to miss. After listening, type the sentence and check it. The local comparison ignores punctuation and highlights each expected word according to whether it appears in the correct position. It is intentionally strict about order: a word that appears elsewhere in the sentence is still shown as a mismatch at its expected position. This makes omissions and transpositions visible.

Use the word comparison as feedback

Pearson explains that Write From Dictation is scored by counting correct words, with partial credit when some words are incorrect. Correct spelling and including the words in the sentence matter. The result on this page is a practice comparison against a small answer key, not Pearson's scoring engine; it does not model every scoring detail or predict a test score. Review the words you missed, say the sentence aloud once, then try a new item rather than replaying the same sentence until it becomes memorized.

Replay in practice; simulate one listen when ready

Unlike the exam's one-play audio, this practice page allows you to replay a prompt when you choose. Use that option to diagnose a missed sound, then do a later attempt with only one listen. You can also continue to the signed-in question bank for additional items and practice history. This task has an objective answer key, so a local word check is useful without AI scoring; a new AI coupon is not needed for this page.
